If you only learn one LED spec, make it pixel pitch. It decides how sharp your wall looks, how close people can stand, and a big chunk of what it costs.
What pixel pitch actually means
Pixel pitch is the distance, in millimeters, between the center of one LED pixel and the next. A P2.5 panel has 2.5 mm between pixels; a P4 panel has 4 mm. Smaller pitch = more pixels packed in = sharper image at close range = higher cost. Larger pitch spreads the pixels out, which is perfectly fine — and far more affordable — when your audience is farther away.
The rule of thumb
A quick field estimate for the minimum comfortable viewing distance:
Pixel pitch (mm) ≈ minimum viewing distance (ft) ÷ 8
So if the nearest viewer stands ~24 ft away, a pitch around P3 is plenty. Stand people 6 ft away and you'll want P1.2–P1.5. Go finer than you need and you're paying for resolution nobody can see.

Don't over-buy
The most common (and expensive) mistake is speccing a finer pitch than the room calls for. The jump from P2.5 to P1.5 can nearly double the panel cost for a wall the audience will never stand close enough to appreciate. Spec to the closest viewer, not the average — and let the budget breathe everywhere else.
